2018 The Year of Expectation vs Reality

I was challenged to create a vision board for 2018 to include all things that are important and a priority in my life. You may think, there are so many things that are important, how can you narrow it down to just a few? I agree. It was a little difficult narrowing it down but of the many things that I had to choose from, these seven focus areas are THE most important. My friend Susan from school created a vision board group on Facebook and shared her past vision board from 2017 to give us a visual as well as ideas of what to include in our vision boards.

I have done vision boards in the past however, I took this one more serious because although 2017 was a good year, there was a lot of not so good things that happened. Vision boards are visuals that are used to concentrate and maintain focus on goals you have set for yourself. You can do vision boards online using technology or you can create one using paper. My board lands somewhere in between.

This is an area that is extremely important to me. It has helped me in the toughest of times as well as the best times. This year, I would like to grow stronger in my faith by completing devotionals daily and journal my lessons. Writing in my journal will help me commit the lesson learned to memory and help me implement what I have learned into my life.

This area breaks down into two areas…


Mario works extremely long hours. He goes in at 2 am and sometimes does not make it home until 6 pm. With that being said, time is limited for us to reconnect. We rarely get a date night in and more times than not, it feels like we are just passing each other by on this thing called life. This year, I would like to have a scheduled date night once a month and connect more as a couple where we are acting more as “one” in our decisions, the way husband and wife should be.


This year, I plan to have intentional time together with the kids, fun family outings once a month. Also, something else that’s extremely important for me is family dinner time. I am guilty of veering away from the way I was raised for dinner time. Dinner growing up was eaten at the table with both parents and my brothers. The table would be set and we would pass the dishes around that held the food. We discussed our day and had conversations with each other.

Today, dinner looks a little different in my home. I fix everyone’s plate and we sit in front of the tv. Cell phones are not banned and we are not actively engaged in conversations with each other. The goal I would like to put in place is to have a no cell phone dinner time where we discuss our day and just catch up on what is going on in our lives.


Saving money is not my forte. I am slightly addicted to shopping. When I am happy, I shop. When I am sad, I shop. I even shop when I am stressed… Do you see the problem here…This year, I would like to budget better. To do this effectively, I have purchased a budget extension pack to use with my planner. The rent we pay is ridiculous and the amount we pay is much more than many pay for their mortgage. Our lease will be up this year so we are wanting to purchase a home. In order to purchase a home, our finances must be in order. I have also been looking into the Dave Ramsey Budget and I am trying to implement that as well.

Well Being

This area is soooooo important. I deal with anxiety and when I am stressed or lacking rest, the anxiety is at an all time high. I want to devote time to take better care of myself through my yoga practice and a better sleep routine. When I work out, I instantly feel better. I feel I look better in my clothes and my mood shoots through the roof. Both of these things help my self-esteem boost and it is imperative for me to stay consistent in this area, doing yoga 5 days a week.

When it comes to my sleep schedule, I currently do not have one and recently have been falling asleep on the couch while watching tv. My sleep is interrupted through the night with my 4 year old climbing into our bed. She has gotten better and only comes at most two times within the night but I need that to be reduced to zero times.

 Journaling is something I would also like to stay consistent with. For as long as I could remember, writing is something that has been an outlet for me. When I need a brain dump, I often journal in whatever random notebook laying around. This year, I would like to journal 3-5 times per week in the same journal. Nothing extreme, just a quick 5-10 minute session for things I am grateful for or things that may be overwhelming me during that season in my life.

Towards the end of 2017, I began getting regular manicures. I would like to continue with this which helps me to get “me time” and come out with beautiful nails.


Friendships are very important. I have said it before but I truly mean it. Friends are family that you get to choose. Moving around a lot growing up, it was always easy for me to meet and befriend new people. Although I know a lot of people and I am friendly with more, I only call a few my true friends. This year, I would like to spend more time building and fostering relationships with people who love me for me and do not have hidden agendas. I want to surround myself with people who help me become a better person, who I can laugh and have a good time with.



This is my 12th year teaching and I would like to get out of the classroom. This year, I am planning on beginning the route to getting my reading endorsement.


Last year, I began blogging monthly, for the most part. This year, I would like to step my blogging up and do it more consistently, at least twice a week. The crazy thing is, I do write often, much more often than I post. I just am so ADD that I fail to complete it and jump onto something else and I haven’t gone back to complete them. As of right now, I have 12 posts that are saved as drafts and need to be posted. I will be working on getting those out as well. I also would like to do more collaborations with other bloggers and possibly some small businesses locally.


Many of you know I am a Beauty Guide for Limelight. A promotion I was able to accomplish in November. In 2018, I would like to qualify every month and post regularly about this amazing company. I have a draft saved that discusses Limelight and the products more thoroughly, so please stay tuned to hear more about that.


This is an area that is very foreign at this time. I have not traveled on a vacation since 2012 for my honeymoon. Traveling is something I used to do often and it is great to just disconnect and see different parts of the world. In 2018, I would like for us to travel as a family on a vacation and as a couple, have a staycation or a weekend getaway.

To Be Vegan or Not To Be Vegan, That Is The Question…

My body failed me… That is all I could think of this past Sunday afternoon as I laid across the couch in pain. A few weeks ago after watching the documentary “What the Health,” my husband and I decided we were going to go vegan. Just like that… The astonishing statistics that were spouted off by the filmmaker Kip Anderson along with the graphic pictures of pigs being poked and puss oozing out had us scared to eat anything that came from animals.chickencowpig

Effective immediately, we were “vegans.” I meal planned for the week and grocery shopped making sure to have plenty of healthy choices around the house.

I even went so far as to pack Brooklyn’s lunch for daycare and told her daycare about the change we were making so they could enforce it as well. We were doing great. No meat, no dairy, no eggs until we craved fish. Fish wasn’t bad right? They did not mention much about fish in the documentary so surely we could add fish back into the diet. So we did just that. Rather than being vegan, we became “pescatarians.” As I am writing this, I am laughing to myself. The labels is what makes me laugh because it really doesn’t matter does it?

Everything was going well until it the third week. I met with a fellow blogger at a local coffee shop and was starving. For the past three weeks, I had been prepared making sure to eat balanced meals and snacks and if I was going out, I would look at the restaurant’s menu to ensure there was something that was accommodating to my new dietary changes. My mistake this particular day was I did not plan. When I got to the coffee shop, there was not much for me to choose from. If it did not have dairy, it had large amounts of sugar and that was something else I was trying to avoid. I decided to go with a vegetarian quiche. If you did not know, there is a HUGE difference between vegetarians and vegans, Vegetarians and vegans do not eat animal flesh however, vegetarians eat dairy and other animal by products while vegans do not. With that being said, my quiche contained both milk and cheese which was something I had taken completely out of my diet. I figured it would be ok for once but boy was I wrong. By the time I made it home, my stomach was cramping and it felt as though I was going to be sick. The following day (Sunday) was much worse. I had chills and body aches as though I had the flu and could not do much more than lay across the couch for over half of the day. Mario seemed to think my problems were stemming from not eating meat and felt I needed to eat meat immediately in order to gain my strength back. I denied it until around two he asked what I wanted to eat and I begged for chicken. I know what you are thinking, she has no self-control. Well, you’re right! LOL. Totally joking. I do have self-control I  just decided to listen to my husband’s advice 😉

So to rewind to the beginning of our vegan journey, we did not think about it, we just threw ourselves into it and there really is not a right or wrong way to do it. Everyone’s journey is different. Anytime you begin working out or decide to make a big change in your eating habits, it is wise to consult your physician to ensure you are making the correct decision that is suitable for you as well as create a plan that you will get the best benefits. I did not do that and many people do not.

When we made the switch, on a typical day, I would start with a serving of fruit accompanied by oatmeal for breakfast. For lunch, I had a salad or avocado toast and for dinner, I would have rice and a veggie or two with two healthy snacks in between.

Looking back, I realized I was not getting enough fiber or protein and that contributed to the weakness I was feeling. One important fact is, I have been off and on iron deficient which started when I got pregnant with my second. This means I need to take supplements or tremendously increase my intake of iron rich food. I do not like taking medicine so that option does not work great and apparently I am not able to get enough in my diet. This only escalated with my attempt at veganism.

As of Sunday, July 23rd, we are back to eating meat, at least once a day until further notice…

How to Successfully Blend Families

This is not a traditional post because I have decided to pull my husband into the blog.  We interviewed each other on the topic of blended families and we both offer our “words of wisdom” and hope it will be beneficial to you or someone you may know.

I want to just throw the disclaimer out that I am not a professional therapist, pastor or any other person you may seek advice from when you are in need. Through experience, I can share with you some of the pitfalls my husband Mario and I went through along our journey and give you some insightful information we think is imperative for blended families in today’s society. During the beginning stages of a relationship, things are amazing. You have this new person you want to spend every waking moment with, your heart skips a beat when they are around and life seems to be the best it has ever been. But what happens when you aren’t able to spend a lot of time together due to your responsibilities as a single mother or father? When everything may not be so picture perfect due to changes in visitation schedules or some unforeseen emergency with the kids. All relationships have ups and downs but when you add children to the mix, it can significantly alter the hopes and dreams you have for a “perfect” relationship. But what exactly is a perfect relationship today anyway?

My husband Mario and I have been together for eight years, married for five on June 20th. We share five children, a 16 year old son and 14 year old daughter from his previous marriage, I have a 12 year old son from a previous relationship and we have two daughters together, 6 and 3 years old. When we first started dating, our kids were 8, 6 and 4 and for those of you who don’t know our dating story, I was his children’s first grade and kindergarten teacher but we did not begin dating until the summer after his daughter graduated kindergarten.

I am not going to get into the background story at this time because that is not the topic of discussion but I figured I would share that tidbit of information to give you an idea of the fuel we threw on the fire of dating with children.

Questions asked by Andrea…

What are the biggest struggles in your opinion we experienced in the beginning stages of our journey?

In the beginning, giving equal love to all the children and balancing my love to let you know I did not love one set of children more than the other set is something I struggled with. Learning how to co-parent and father my stepson as well as parenting two kids who were many miles away who I felt were being neglected because my stepson was getting more time was the hardest part for me.

What has changed?

Over time, I learned how to adjust. I have learned what my stepson likes as well as what his personality is so that has helped us to develop a relationship. I also try to get all of the kids together as much as possible during school breaks so everyone feels they are loved and we are all a family.

What do you do to keep your relationship in good standing with your kids in spite of the distance between you all?

I communicate often through text messages and phone calls just like you and I did when we were separated before I moved back to South Florida. We also facetime and I ask them about their day and anything new that is going on in their lives so I can keep up with their lives. It could be compared to a soldier that is deployed in another country away from family. He and his wife will try their best to keep him active and up to date with the daily structure of the family’s day so he feels like he is there even though he is not physically there. Although I’m not there physically, I actively stay involved and try to reassure them and let them know they are loved, that they are being thought of and let them know they are missed. I also allow them to communicate with their sisters and stepbrother so they can continue to maintain that bond.


What do you wish you would have known prior to blending our family?

I wish I would have been better prepared with some type of coaching, counseling sessions or mentoring by someone who was currently in a blended family.

What kind of advice could you offer newly blended families?

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help
  • Seek good spiritual advice
  • Be open minded
  • Take advantage of family time to unite the family with things such as family movie night, game night or visits to the park.


Questions asked by Mario…

What is your definition of a blended family?

A blended family is a family unit that involves an adult with one or more children that marries someone with or without a child.


How has it been since blending the family?

Since blending our families, there have been ups and there have been downs as I suspect any relationship has. What has made it harder is having people outside of us that had to be considered before we could make decisions. When we were dating, our children came first but after being married, the children were put after the husband and the wife and that was very hard for me to adjust to because for so long, it was just Jordan and myself. I did not have to consider anyone else; I did what was best for us. When we blended families that all changed and for many years, it was a back and forth battle for who was the head of the household which was apparent in how bumpy things were. Not until recently, I would say within the last year have I began to allow that control to be within your hands as my husband knowing that you have our best interest at heart.

What is the hardest part about being in a blended family?

In the beginning, the hardest part about being in a blended family was the children being raised in different households which meant different parenting styles and different rules. In the beginning, when we were establishing boundaries, I didn’t want to step on any toes and instead of staying true to what I was comfortable with, I allowed things to slide that I normally wouldn’t which caused frustration for me. Currently, the hardest thing is having our children living in different homes. In a perfect world, I would have them all in our house.

Blended families can be healthy if…

  • They communicate with one another openly knowing that regardless of what they say, they will not be judged.
  • They have fun with each other as a family as well as one on one with the parents so they still feel they are important to their parents. The children should spend time with their parent as well as the step/bonus parent to help build and maintain a strong bond.

What are some things you can tell other couples looking to blend families?

  • In any marriage, putting God first will help all other things fall into their designated position.
  • It is important to work on building a friendship first with your significant other to build a united front so no one (including your kids) will be able to manipulate either one of you.
  • You are not alone. As you said, a mentor couple would be beneficial to have around to bounce questions and scenarios off of. Situations blended families deal with are different from traditional family structures. Newly blended families should also look for healthy couples to surround themselves with and be careful who they allow in their ear because not everyone has their best interest at heart. When blending a family, it’s good to have positive people who speak life into your marriage and who understand not everything will be a bed of roses without stepping on some thorns. Just because things may not be picture perfect at all times (which is normal), it is ok. That does not mean you need to tag team and bash your marriage or family. Side note- Anyone who doesn’t respect and understand that may have to be released from your circle of friends if you plan on remaining married.
  • If you begin to have trouble within your blended family, it is ok to ask for help whether from a friend, family member, pastor or a therapist.
